Your website is the face of your business and most people will judge you and your products and services based on the experience they have on your website.
I have a major issue with poor website design and lack of usability testing. I frequently stumble across websites from small and large companies that simply do not perform for me, the user.
Good Website Design
I like to start with what I believe are the four key elements to good website design and it is important to consider each of these when developing your online presence:
- Target Audience
First and foremost you need to establish who is visiting your website and why. If you start by identifying key users such as customers, potential customers, suppliers, visitors, potential employees then you can identify the main reasons why each group would visit the site.
All websites should be easy to use and simple to navigate. It is essential to establish what visitors want from the website and to give it to them quickly and easily. People do not have a lot of patience when it comes to growing on the internet so you are likely to lose visitors if they cannot find what they are looking for.
The look and feel of the website is important to create the right impression. Many people would put design at the top of the priority list however there are many pretty websites that do not deliver and this is simply disappointing. Once you know what visitors want, then you can deliver it to them in an attractive format.
If you have read anything about online marketing recently then you cannot fail to have noticed that everyone is shouting about the value of content marketing. Content marketing involves delivering regular updates to your website with relevant, useful information. This should be on the agenda for anyone that has a website, however most of us struggle to find the time to constantly develop new relevant material. One way to achieve this is by writing regular blogs.
